July 30: With the cost of everything going up, we've decided to cut back on our vacation spending and do our vacation from home. So, today's vacation day was a trip in the afternoon to the beach and then a stop at The Oaks Mall in Thousand Oaks. We found a dime and 6 pennies at the mall.

July 29: Big earthquake today... 5.7 on the scale. Luckily, it was 65 miles away from us... we just got the feeling of a "gentle roll." But, it was intense enough... scary enough. As for me, I was stopped at a light and felt our Ford Explorer buck to and fro as if someone was quickly jumping on the bumpers from opposing positions.

The family took the afternoon off to visit DisneyLand... Disney about $400.00 and us just two cents.

We found 2 pennies at the Mouse's house!

FMJ - Day 850

July 28: Ajay and I found 7 pennies laying in the dirt along median of the drive-thru at Carl's Jr. on L.A. Ave. Seems the pennies were tossed out the window of a customer's vehicle. To that, I say... "thanks!"

FMJ - Day 838

July 16: No finds were made. Maya and Ajay wanted to stay at home and play the day away. Ajay was a complete gentleman to his sister... I think he missed her a lot!

They spent the day being best buds.

Maya is back from Malaysia and Singapore!

July 15: Maya's plane landed on time at LAX exactly at 6:35p.m. from Kuala Lumpur via Taipei! She's back to us safe and sound. We actually got to watch the landing as we were driving along Century Blvd. as her Malaysian Airlines 747 descended through the air onto the runway... I can't tell you the sigh of relief I breathed at that moment.

She had quite an experience. She visited the Genting Island in Malaysia, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, she rode the subway which was featured in the movie ENTRAPMENT. She flew to Bangkok, Thailand. While there, she and her Mayma visited the markets on the water riding in a shell boat and Budha's golden temples. She spent 5 days in Singapore with friends of her Aunt staying at their condo which was like being in a resort. She shopped and shopped... and thinks Singapore is one the best countries on earth... so clean and well designed. "The subway get you everywhere and your totally safe there," she said.

Her one complaint... THE FOOD WAS TERRIBLE. Worst Thai food she's ever had! Oh, well...

Any strange occurrences?... Maya, her Aunt and Mayma were followed by this "weird" indian guy through the airport and to their hotel. Finally, her Aunt whose spent many an adventure overseas in Asia thrashed the guy and threatened to have him jailed for stalking them. He wasn't seen after that.

What did Ajay and I find while at the airport? 5 pennies in the international terminal arrivals area.

A little recycling for you.

July 11: Watching the stock of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in a free-fall earlier this morning led me to one thing... it isn't easy being a stock investor in tough times. I just keep my head up knowing that most cycles do end and the market prospects will turn higher at sometime. I own shares of both Freddie and Fannie... I took time this week to buy more Freddie Mac to average down my investment cost as I think the government will not let them fail and as many people have retirement funds directly linked to GSE stock through their 401k and IRA accounts via the Mutual Funds. A collapse of one of them would mean an utter failure of our banking system -- OVERNIGHT! So, I figure as a long term investment both GSE should do just fine! Still, it's quite nerve wracking particpating in this market.

So, we got away from it all and went to play tennis... and hour on the court and I have no cares. Ajay is improving his game everyday -- hitting a forehand and backhand volley then smash in succession now. I think he may be playing in tournaments by the end of summer. Maya emailed us from Singapore... she's having a great time but annoyed at her Grandma (Mayma) for saying "NO" so much. Mayma lost her eyeglasses in Bangkok... so Maya has to do all the reading.

After tennis, lunch at Del Taco near the Simi Valley Town Center where we found three pennies. We found a quarter in the parking spot next to our spot at Wood Ranch Park and we found a penny at the recycling center.

We recycled $7.40 worth of bottles and cans.

El Cajon means "the box." Fitting, I think.

July 7: My wife had a business meeting about a possible "new big job" in San Diego. She's a very respected person in her industry and, as such, is recommended for jobs quite often. She's mainly worked amongst the Fortune 500 but this job being offered was something different... to become the "head honcho" at a closely held company that has the prospects of going public. I can't divulge more information than that...

Anyhow, we drive to San Diego to visit their site which was actually in EL Cajon. Using our GPS map and having never visited the El Cajon area before, I was surprised by the first impression and hopefully my only impression of EL Cajon. I might as well call El Cajon the other side of California. Leaving the 8 Freeway and turning onto Johnson Ave., we were met with what I can only say is the lowest form of the American Dream... A city devoid of any beauty, littered by the remnants of the foreclosure crisis and teaming with illegal immigrants -- A Third World hidden by the Hills!

El Cajon in Spanish literally translates into "THE BOX." A most truthful naming of a city I've ever come across. The city is surrounded by high hills and can't be seen from the outside. It's people are mostly living in poverty... low income housing, cars on blocks, and young men in gangster clothes hanging out on the streets. Liquor stores, quickie marts, and fast food seem to be the only businesses that thrive. There were lots of store closings and vacant available retail spaces. El Cajon is truly San Diego's armpit.

Having spent most of an afternoon there wondering the Westfield Parkway Mall and driving through it's dilapidated neighborhoods, I truly could not understand why any American with a sense of dignity or class would ever want to live there. I left El Cajon last night with a smile knowing I will never have to set foot there, again.

Okay, so here's what we found during our visit to "THE BOX." A penny at the Jack in the Box on College Ave. near UCSD. A quarter that was stuck in a coin slot of a vending machine in the Westfield Parkway mall and successfully recovered with my slick use of my car key. 3 dimes and 6 pennies found whilst strolling the mall. A dime picked up at the GOLDEN STATE gas station on Second St. in El Cajon. A nickel found during a bathroom stop at an In-N-Out burger along the I-5 in La Mirada on the way home.

77 cents in all.

FMJ - Day 828

July 6: Lots of coin finds today. In the morning, I went to Wescom Credit Union on Tap Canyon Rd. to use the "free" coin counting machine and deposit Found Money Jar coins in our account to cover the additional share purchase of the Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust nyse:PEI). I found two pennies stepping out of the car. Atop the coin counting machine were a disregarded Canadian Quarter and Penny -- scoop those, too. Afterwards, I had breakfast at the Carl's Jr. nearby. Upon leaving Carl's, I noticed a handful's worth of pennies scattered about a parking space out front of the restaurant -- 31 pennies in all.

Next stop, Bed-Bath and Beyond for new wine glasses -- found a dime at the register. Then, I drove to the recycling center at the Ralph's on L.A. Ave. to cash in a large box full of bottles and cans. I received $6.10 for them. When scooping up the dime for my payment from the automatic coin changer at the checkout, I noticed a prior customer had left behind their coins in the "scooping dish." Well, add 2 quarters, a nickel and six pennies to today's take. Nothing like a blessed donation.

The evening was equally interesting from a coin hunting prospective. We went to Port Hueneme Beach to take in the sand and surf. Making a stop for sodas, I found 7 pennies that had been dropped at the entrance to a nondescript quickie mart near the subway restaurant. After the Beach, we had dinner at India Cafe in Camarillo, CA. I found a dime in the parking stall next to us. Last stop, CVS drugstore for an First Aid kit to keep in the Toyota Solara. Again, I found a dime in the parking lot.

Maya called at 6:20am our time from Malaysia -- I guess she doesn't yet understand the time difference of this trip. In her message, which was quite garbled and sounded as if it came of "overseas," she said she was fine and then gave a very unintelligible phone number to return the call. That's all for now. **I can't wait for her return.

Happy Fourth of July!

232 Years and the our glorious country's future still burns bright! My wife, Ajay and I spent our Fourth walking on the beach in Ventura. At Emma Wood State Beach, I found a shiny dime. Ajay found a penny while walking into Red Brick Pizza in Moorpark, CA.

I attended my first Fourth of July tennis social at the Moorpark Tennis Club. I've played on several USTA tennis teams hosted by the club but never joined in the socials. I had a great time mixing with the members. They put on quite a picnic spread... GREEK SALAD! Veggie burgers, turkey burger and good ole' hamburgers! AND BEERS! Nothing better than good friends, tennis and beer. LOTS OF HOTDOGS! WOW! And, the tennis round robin was a sight to behold! I aced one the best players in the club... after he made a boisterous remark after my he was having so much trouble returning my serves to his backhand. "You just give me one of those to my forehand and you'll see what I'll do with it!" I quietly and deftly belted in right down the middle for a first serve ace! A shot to remember!

It was a great time!

FMJ - Day 824

July 2: Well, it was day one of not having Maya at home right near me. I'm missing her already. Ajay misses her, too. He's being very clingy. We went to his tennis camp in the morning at California Lutheran Univ. Great campus! This is Ajay's first summer in tennis camp. He is improving everyday and now rallies up to 30 balls in a row with me when we play from service line to service line. His two handed backhand is smoothing out and he's started to add topspin to it.

After tennis, we had lunch at Topper's Pizza. No finds were made but we did collect a bag of bottles and cans from tennis camp.

Gas prices... they retreated about 8 cents this week. Calm before the storm? Last month, we spent a total of $740.00 towards gas for our cars. I've been tracking my spending by paying for all of our fill-ups with my credit card. We've been trying to cut back on driving and even spent a less than what we did in May. Hopefully, we can cut it down further.

FMJ - Day 823

July 1: In the evening, we drove to LAX to drop Maya off at the airport for her flight to Malaysia with Maya and Aunt Anju. 14 days she'll be gone -- seems like forever. Very worried and nervous about this trip as I'm her Daddy. Anyway, she's extremely excited and I'm sure she'll come back much more grown up and worldly.

So, we stopped at our favorite hangout in Westwood Village -- Falafel King. There, I found a penny. After dinner, we walked around stopping at the CVS for candies for Maya's flight -- found a dime.

Maya, Maya... Oh, the places you will go!

FMJ - Day 822

June 30: While shopping at Walmart for some last minute items for Maya's trip to Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore, we found a dime and 2 pennies. Maya is taking this trip with her grandma and great-aunt Anju, who works for Malaysian Airlines. She'll visit Bangkok, Kuwala-Lumpur and Singapore spending a total of 14 days -- what a trip for an 11 year old. Being her Daddy... I'm worried and nervous. But, I'm trusting good fortune and her Auntie and Mayma to take loving care of her. She's going to do some coin hunting for the Found Money Jar on her trip -- can't wait to see her finds.
