FMJ - Day 458

June 29: The first week of Maya's tennis camp is over. Today, she was awarded a medal for her efforts on the court. She survived the challengingly hot weather of the Northridge area and made many new "tennis" friends. Next week, there is no camp as it's "Fourth of July." They pick back up for 4 straight weeks starting on the July 9th. I've also entered her in the Northridge Jr. Tournament held at the CSUN in the afternoons starting also on the 9th. It will be her first taste of competitive tennis.

Coin finds: 34 cents including 3 dimes and 4 pennies. Late last night during my evening neighborhood walk, I found 2 pennies in the parking lot of the McDonald's on Yosemite Ave. At breakfast (same McD's), we found 2 pennies. A stop for Ice Cream at Von's on Yosemite Ave. brought us a dime. Lunch at the Northridge Mall food court and Ajay finds 2 dimes at the Donatello's Pizza. I bought a stand-up Ozone reducing fan at the Sharper Image... they're having a very good sale on them right now. I had bought a smaller compact version and had it by my bedside. The fans are quite refreshing and pleasant.

FMJ - Day 457

June 28: Maya's fourth day of tennis camp and she's started to develop a "classic" service style. I noticed a lot of focus and improvement in her game today. Late last night, we spent some time practicing serve and it seemed to have paid off this morning.

A stop for milk and strawberries at Von's graced us with a penny, another Philippines ten centavos coin from 1966 and a 2 Euro Cent-piece. A second stop at Von's for some lunchtime vittles from the deli garnered a dime and penny.

FMJ - Day 456

June 27: Ajay and I found a dime and two pennies. The dime was found a In-N-Out Burger in Porter Ranch. A single penny was while crossing the parking lot at the Porter Ranch TownCenter as we were approaching the Toys R Us. While inside of the Toys R Us, we found another penny. Maya's tennis camp is again a major contributor of bottles to our fund with 30 water/sports drink bottles.

Another interesting find was a pair of new ladies Bolle sunglasses which had been dropped on a sidewalk of the CSUN campus. I asked around the courts if they belonged to anyone... no takers. I suspect they were dropped be a summer student and not a tennis player.

FMJ - Day 454

June 25: $2.25 found. Maya's first day of summer tennis camp proved itself quite the windfall, as I had expected it to be. Ajay and I practiced on a court while the tennis camp was in session... we found two quarters and a penny on court 12. We also collected 10 bottles and cans. After practicing for an hour, we headed to McDonald's at the corner of Lindley & Reseda. We found two pennies there. There was a Von's in the plaza in which the McDonald's was located and we needed more bottled water... Ajay found 5 dimes, a nickel and 13 pennies in the coin counting machine's reject shoot. We picked up Maya from tennis camp and had lunch at Northridge Mall. In the mall, we found 4 pennies and a single dollar bill. Ajay found the dollar bill in KB Toys.

We also found a coin from Thailand (denomination ?) and a "25 Sentimo" coin from the Phillipines.

June 24: $1.29 found. On our way to Zuma Beach in Malibu, we stopped at Ralph's Supermarket in Thousand Oaks... found 3 quarters. We frolicked the afternoon away at the beach and as we were leaving the car behind our car pulled out onto the PCH revealing a quarter, dime and nickel in its space. I quickly scooped them before another car pulled in behind ours which did happen about 2 minutes later. After dinner at Topper's Pizza, we went to Kohl's in Simi Valley. Ajay and I found a dime and four pennies walking around the Paseo Del Simi shopping plaza.

June 23: Two pennies found while shopping at Camarillo Outlets for Maya's tennis togs. Maya starts 5 weeks of tennis camp at Cal State Northridge with Gary Victor who coaches the tennis teams. This is her first summer tennis camp -- should be an interesting experience for her. With all hope, she'll be in her first tournament in August.

In the evening, we went to Mayma's house to pick-up the kids. The park across the street yielded 52 beer and soda cans from the picnic area. The park could double our monthly collection.

FMJ - Day 450

June 21: We found 11 pennies. The first 9 pennies were found scattered around the parking space next to ours at the Del Taco in Moorpark. The kids are staying with their Mayma in Cerritos for the next few days. On our way down to Cerritos, we made a stop in the City of Commerce for the McDonald's. Traffic on the I-5 was miserable and it took us a total of 3 hours to travel 53 miles. At the McDonald's, Ajay found 2 pennies.

June 19: Found 22 cents. An afternoon lazy bike ride around our neighborhood gave us two pennies found along our streets. An evening jaunt to the Wood Ranch Park Tennis Courts for a practice that had Mommy rallying with Ajay for the first time ever provided us with 2 dimes which were pointed out to us by a grandfatherly gentleman as he was packing his racquets upon leaving the courts. Somehow, I sensed he knew me and maybe had heard about my blog. He was quite eager to tell us about these dime which laid near fence line. Anyway, thanks for the "heads-up." The Challenge

Today, I figured out just how many more bottles and cans we need to collect to stay on our target of reaping $1,000 in our bottles & Cans Fund by its second anniversary!

We need to add $155.71 to the fund and we have just 107 days to go. Total bottles and can needed: 3,115! That's collecting 30 per day! What a challenge.

FMJ - Day 447

June 18: Found a nickel and a penny at this "quick and greasy" on L.A. Ave. called Burger Express! Good food if you desire a premature cardiac arrhythmic episode. Going bowling on Day 448... with the kids out of school for summer, I'm going places to keep them busy.

In the evening as Maya and Mommy were at the gym, Ajay and I took our recycling to the Wood Ranch Recycling spot... recovered $18.95 for the B & C Fund.

FMJ - Day 446

June 17: Father's Day was spent just like any other Sunday... in Cerritos with our family. Nothing special was done. We went to Ikea in Costa Mesa to do some shopping of household goods for Mayma's house... kitchen stuff and bedroom furniture for the grandchildren. I found 2 quarters and 4 pennies just past the check-outs.

Aunt Anju had a large bag of bottles and cans for us. Every time she donates her recyclables, there is a special gleam in her eyes which tells you she likes being a part of something good. It's a fine quality, for sure.

FMJ - Day 445

June 16: Found three pennies. The first two were found at Von's Supermarket on Yosemite Ave. The last one was found while pumping gas at the new Exxon on Cochran. Yesterday, I played in our last team match of the spring season... Dan Van Heerdon and I played against Barry L. and Larry H. They're the #1 doubles team in the Moorpark Tennis Club... Dan and I won the match - 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). It was an extremely tight match... we were down 2-4 in the first set and fought hard to win four straight games. It was a great win for us.... For our team captain is was an especially cherished win for reasons I'll keep in close confidence.

After the match, Maya, Ajay and I stayed at the courts for drills. The kids are improving -- we've been spending more time on backhands hit down the line and volleys and smashes. Maya is participating in a 5 week tennis camp this summer at UC Northridge. The camp is run by the Northridge team tennis coach. It will be exciting to see her tennis when the camp is finished in August.

We collected a big bag of bottles and cans from the team match.

June 15: 43 cents found. In the afternooon, I went for a haircut at the Fantastic Sam's at the corner of Tapo Canyon & Cochran. Found a nickel and 2 pennies in the parking lot. Funny thing about my visit to Fantastic Sam's --- my barber's actual name was "Sam." And, he's a wild and crazy guy, just look here: www.bornhye.com -- too funny! The kids' school is officially out for summer... and with that, Maya was invited to her friend's house for a massive pool party. She was in the pool a good 5 hours straight. How do I know? Very red eyes! Kids? During her party, Ajay and I went to McDonald's on L.A. Ave. for some food and fun. We found a quarter, dime and penny while partaking in that fine grub.

FMJ - Day 441

June 12: A Euro 5 Cent coin was found on the floor of Albertson's on Madera Rd. Ajay and I popped into there to buy the Daily News paper that has a good article on the recent inflation of food prices nationwide. Interesting. For lunch, Ajay and I stopped at Carl's Jr. -- we found two pennies there. Maya was the queen of coin finding today... she found a quarter at school. In the morning, at tennis, a donation of a dime to the FMJ occurred as one of the players dropped a dime while playing this morning.

This past weekend, Uncle Joe donated 8 cans to the cause. My mother-in-laws new house in right across the street from a 1 acre picnic park and playground called Saddleback Park. No horses, though. FMJ - Day 438

June 9: Threw my back out playing tennis this morning... we had a USTA Spring League match against the Ojai team. I played in #1 singles. First time, I've played singles this seasons for our team. We were on serve and I was leading 5-4 in the first set when while stretching for a two-handed backhand on the run my back was wrenched a little to far and I felt a pain all along my right left. I continued to play losing the first 7-5 and at 3-3 in the second... I retired.

I found two pennies at El Pollo Loco in Moorpark. A late night trip to the Paseo Simi Plaza and I find a quarter and a penny near some tables at the Coffee Bean. FMJ - Day 433

June 4: Found three pennies. Last night, a trip to Von's for milk, soda and money produced a penny... actually it was a redemption slip from the CoinMaster machine with a 1 cent value on it. Quite likely, someone threw a penny in the machine to see if it would print out on a penny... and it did. Anyway, he or she left the slip as they didn't feel like turning it in for the cash. I was most happy to redeem it. The cashier thought I was mad to ask her to deduct the penny from my bill. I just said, "hey, a penny is a penny" with a snicker.
