FMJ - Day 395 SPECIAL AWAY NOTICE!

April 27: Found a single penny at the Rancho Simi Tennis Courts. Second time this week. BTW, Uncle Joe's donation from yesterday amounted to 33 bottles and cans. I found 7 today.

Note to all: Staff members of the Found Money Jar will be away from Saturday until late Wednesday. We're going to Las Vegas on the company's dime! My wife's company awarded her a trip to Vegas to speak at a company retreat and accept a "special" award. Good Going to my lovely lady! Whole tab will be picked up by the company including $200 in casino chips! AWESOME! NOTHING BETTER THAN FREE MONEY!

Expect me to keep track of all the Vegas finds... I'll be on 24 hour casino duty so there might be a big one. I plan to hit every casino there!

FMJ - Day 394

April 26: Found 30 cents. The first find was made while pumping gas at ARCO on L.A. Ave. -- 2 pennies. A stop at the 99 cents only store and I find a penny upon paying for my purchase. Another penny was found at the kids school. In the afternoon, the kids and I went to Cerritos to help Uncle Joe and Mayma move some old appliances to ready them for sale. We're about 3 months into our renovations and updating of the home Mayma purchase last December... another few weeks and it will be ready for her to live in. Can't wait! We've completely changed the bathrooms and kitchen. Scraped and repainted the ceilings. And... put new tiles on the floor. Next step -- back yard landscaping. After my work there, I went to Jollibee (a filipino fast-food joint) for some chicken and rice. Found a quarter and a penny along my walk from Jollibee in Cerritos.

Uncle Joe made a donation of bottles and cans.

April 25: Found a penny on our tennis court after my doubles match this morning... most likely dropped by one of our morning gang of tennis nuts. Danny C. and I played Dan Y. and Eric "the A.C. Guy"... we lost 6-4, 6-3... they played really well. Dan and I played a good game but they just bested us.

April 24: Found 62 cents. In the morning, I found a penny at Rancho Simi Park near the shuffleboard courts and a penny at Del Taco in the Sycamore Village Center. At McDonald's in Moorpark I found a nickel in the trough of the soda dispenser. After school, the kids and I played baseball. I found 2 quarters and a nickel which were left behind home plate near the catcher's stop.

Turn-in $7.15 worth of bottles and cans at the Sycamore Ave. recycling center... Aunt Anju's donation was roughly worth half of today's net receipt.

Recycling Update.

April 23: Today, we turned in all the cans and bottles from before our trip to Arizona and last weeks collections... it was our biggest turn-in ever. Chalk up $24.40 for the B&C Fund. I wonder what the maximum amount of bottles and cans I could transport in my Ford Explorer to the recycling center? I'm thinking about $50.00 worth... my next experiment.

Hey, we also found a penny at the recycling center.

FMJ - Day 386

April 18: I came across 9 pennies while shopping at Von's Supermarket on Yosemite Ave. 8 pennies were found as remainders resting comfortably abreast the reject change shoot in the coin counting machine. I guess their prior owner didn't want them or maybe he didn't realize that some of the coins you run thru the machine will be rejected. I would never use one of these machine but I sure to love the people who do... The Found Money Jar thanks them. The last penny was found outside near the payphone.

I need to make a recycling center run. I've got three full box of cans and bottles in the garage... must be about $15 worth. Maybe I'll do it on Friday.

Dividends!

Our second dividend from our purchase of Glimcher Realty Trust (GRT-NYSE) was posted to our account on 4/16/2007. This dividend was $9.48... each time we reinvest in the stock we receive a little extra dividend the next time around as we pick-up more shares. There's nothing like compounding!

Got another .361 partial share for the dividend. Now, we hold 20.088 shares at a cost of $26.843671 per share for a total value of $549.61 from an investment cost of $520.46 in December 2006. Our new holding has grown by $29.15 in just 5 short months.

FMJ - Day 385

April 17: No finds occurred on this day. Spent much of the day doing bookkeeping for my tax guy. I went to my local Schwab office to put $4,000 into my IRA eventhough it's no longer deductible as my wife and I are members of the AMT club... what a joke is this tax system. What good is a progressive tax code with "social and political tax breaks" if more and more of our populace doesn't get to use these deductions as the AMT swoops in to deny your deductions should your cross an certain income threshold? I'm not Bill Gates and I don't own mansions on islands like Bermuda... why do I suffer like them. It almost farcical!

FMJ - Day 384

April 16: Taxes! Filed them with a lot of questions... Just where does my almost $40,000 in federal taxes paid in 2006 go? What could I do to better the world with that money? We certainly didn't save that much of our income for our future years as we paid in tax. Taxes are too high in this country and we should really complain about the services we receive for all these taxes.

I'm ranting again, I know, but I'm personally "Pissed off" at all the wasteful spending of our hard earned tax dollars.

No finds for Day 384. Did pick-up 17 cans and bottles during my daily routine.

FMJ Days 375 thru 382

FMJ-375 April 7: Found 13 cents. First find 2 pennies at our Shell Station on Yosemite Ave. just before leaving for our trip the prior day. A dime was found at the 7-11 on Hwy. 111 in Rancho Mirage, CA. Another penny was found at the Renaissance Hotel in Indian Wells, CA.

FMJ-376 April 8: Found a single penny at the Desert Ridge Marketplace in Phoenix, AZ.

FMJ-377 April 9: Found 56 cents. Find #1 was 2 pennies at Einstein Bagels in Desert Ridge Marketplace. Then, Maya found a penny at Old Navy. Ajay found a penny at Slice Pizza in Desert Ridge Marketplace. In the afternoon, I found 2 quarters and 2 pennies on a lunge chair table as the "lazy River' pool was being closed for the day at the J.W Marriott in Desert Ridge where we stayed while in Phoenix, AZ.

FMJ-378 April 10: Found two pennies at the Scottsdale Fashion Square in Scottsdale, AZ. My wife loves her shopping... she spent $800.00 in 3 hours at this lavish and swank shopping mecca.

FMJ-379 April 11: Found 32 cents. Find #1 was at an early morning breakfast by myself at McDonald's on Cave Creek Rd., a few miles from Desert Ridge. Find #2 was a dime at the Einstein Bros. Bagels again. Find #3 was 3 pennies but I have forgotten where. Find #4 was a penny from the sidewalk at Desert Ridge Marketplace. Find #5 was a dime, a nickel and 2 pennies at the Border's at the Biltmore Shopping Center off Camelback Rd.

FMJ-380 April 12: Upon leaving Desert Ridge, we made a gas stop at Danny's Market in Desert Ridge. I found 11 cents there in form of a nickel and 6 pennies. In afternoon, a stop for lunch at Anthem Outlets just north of the Phoenix Area along U.S. Rt. 17 and I found 2 dimes, a nickel and penny. 37 cents total for day 380.

FMJ-381 April 13: $1.07 for this day. I found three pennies at a nondescript gas station in Aqua Fria, AZ. In the evening, Maya found a one dollar bill on the sidewalk near the Chinese restaurant in West Sedona. Another pit-stop at the Giant Gas Mart in Oak Creek Village, AZ produced 4 pennies.

FMJ-382 April 14: Found 13 cents at our the Hilton Sedona in the lobby. I almost sat right on the coins... they were left in my chair by an unwitting contributor.

TOTAL of money found on this vacation: $2.61

Of note: I received a 1964 Silver Washington quarter as part of my change from a small purchase along this trip. I discovered it this morning as I was cleaning out my travel kit where I keep all my pocket change during vacations and travels.

Back from Vacation... What a Trip!

April 15: Just finished driving home from Sedona, Arizona. Total miles driven today to get back home... 544 Miles! I'm tired, exhausted but euphoric for having a chance to see the Red Rocks of Sedona... It was exhilerating! We visited Honanki Indian ruins on a "Pink Jeep Tour," visited Slide Rock State Park (Will GO BACK!), and my wife and I took the kids on their First Horseback Trail Ride (THEY'RE Natural RIDERS.) OUr first two days were spent in Palm Springs, CA at the Renaisance Esmeralda Resort for relaxing by the pool and some family tennis. The, we drove to Phoenix, AZ and stayed in Desert Ridge at the JW Marriott Resort and shopped like crazy in Scottsdale, AZ "where the rich and famous shop." We spent four days there swimming and laying round the pools... and the LAZY RIVER! Great place for tennis!

Our best dinner was at El Encanto in Cave Creek, AZ. Out of the way but worth it in every bite! Then, on to SEDONA! I'll save Sedona for its own post.

B&C Fund Notation: I manage somehow to keep all our bottles and cans from this trip and a few "recovered strays" by stashing them in our dirty clothes bag and in the "foot wells" of our third row seats in the Explorer... 122 bottles and cans recycled on this trip.... almost six bucks worth!

Found lots of coins and a dollar bill. (post FMJ finds later.)

Two pennies found on our returning drive home at our pit-stops. Drove the 544 miles in 8 hours and 12 minutes... with 2.5 hours of pit-stops.

I was flying across the desert southwest!

FMJ - Day 374 (ON VACATION UNTIL 4/16!)

March 6: Found a single penny at the ARCO STATION on Madera Rd. last night after an arduous evening of filing our tax return then a late night visit to the Simi Valley post office... Glad that's over! I'm officially for the last two years in the AMT and it sucks! Last year, we lost the mortgage interest deduction for our house in Virginia because of the stupid AMT calculation.... I'm not filthy rich... so, why should I be in the AMT? What got me into the AMT? Our move from VA (a low state income tax) to CA (a high state income tax.) So, I got burned on state income taxes... about 4% percent higher in CA than VA... and, I got to lose all my deductions on my federal return! Ain't the TAX MAN GRAND?!!

Oh, well. enough of my ranting... this post and all my efforts will never change the system... better to just find ways to work with it, or around it.

BTW... the family and I will be on holiday in Sedona, Arizona until April 16th! So, don't expect any postings for the FMJ blog... We're on hiatus! I'll keep a record of all finds and post them in one BIG post when we return.

Penn. Real Estate Investement Trust News!

SHARES HIT HIGHEST MARK ON POSSIBLE SALE RUMOUR!

THIS STOCK LOOKS LIKE IT'S A WINNER AGAIN! FMJ's 15 shares about to reap a hefty dividend.

Here's the news:

By Suzannah Benjamin

BANGALORE, April 5 (Reuters) - Shares of Pennsylvania Real Estate Investment Trust (PEI.N: Quote, Profile , Research) hit a lifetime-high on speculation that the company had put itself up for sale, but retreated after it denied any such move.

The company's shares rose about 8 percent to $50.39 in morning trade after a trade publication said, "Penn REIT is quietly (or not so quietly depending on who one talks with) shopping itself."
Reuters Pictures
Photo

There is no truth to that," Pennsylvania REIT vice president of investor relations Nurit Yaron told Reuters from Philadelphia.

The trade publication, The REIT Newshound, said CBL & Associates Properties Inc. (CBL.N: Quote, Profile , Research) has been talking to Penn REIT for some time.

"We don't comment on market rumour," a CBL spokeswoman said by phone.

REIT Newshound mentioned General Growth Properties Inc. (GGP.N: Quote, Profile , Research) as another possible bidder, but said CBL was the more likely buyer.

General Growth was not immediately available for comment.

UBS analyst Jeffrey Spector said any REIT that is trading at a discount to its net asset value could be in play.

On Penn REIT, Spector said, "I don't believe the speculation is true."

Penn REIT shares were trading about 2 percent up at $47.50 in late trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

About 1.1 million shares were traded on Thursday, which is almost four times their 50-day moving average volume.

Kids and sickness! FMJ - Day 372

April 4: Both of my little ones were running fevers this morning and that meant stay at home time with Dad. Motrin did the trick with this virus and they were quickly cured. Lunch at McDonald's and a stop at Walmart for some much needed supplies. Then, a couple hoppers of balls at the tennis courts. Somehow their morning 'Creepy Crud" was healed away. All normal in the afternoon! We found a penny at Walmart in Porter Ranch, CA.

Also, we garnered 10 water bottles for the fund at the tennis courts.

BTW, I made lemonade from fresh lemons picked from my tennis buddy's lemon trees... Incredibly tasty. It was my first time making lemonade by myself... MOM always made it fresh for us as kids... got to repay the favor today.

HERE's my post about it on Frugal for Life:

Today, I took a step towards the simpler life and made Lemonade for the very first time in my 38 years on this earth. A good friend who has a few lemon trees offered me a bag of Lemons a few days back. They sat around staring at me until I got the gumption to do it. I googled a lemonade recipe and went to work slicing and squeezing. Boiled water and sugar. Added the juice of six fresh squeezed lemons. Finally, I set it to cool in the fridge.

Tonight, I will surprise my troops to the freshest lemonade in their lives.

Your Donations Are Welcome Here!

Tonight, I received an email from a regular lurker to this blog. She suggested that I start a "Tip Jar." Well, I'm taking you up on your proposition. After some useless googling, I was able to borrow the source code from someone's blog to set the new donation fund in motion. We'll keep track of these donations and invest them just like we do for the "Found Money Jar" and the "Bottles and Cans Fund." It'll be interesting to see just how much FMJ readers donate... Kind of like little gifts.

Just in case your wondering what we'll eventually do with the "donation fund" monies. I plan dedicate them to teaching underprivileged kids my favorite sport... TENNIS! One day when I'm unable to continue playing competitively in tennis tournaments, I'll spend my days bringing youngsters into the game of tennis... "passing on the religion" as my late father-in-law who was also a tennis nut used to say.

April 1: No coin finds. We did pick-up quite a few bottles in the park across the street from my Mother-in-law's new house in Cerritos, CA. The kids and I played catch with our baseball gloves. Mayma's neighborhood park has three picnic tables and it looks like they get used... great for bottles and cans. Her street is circular and the park is directly across the street, I'm talking just 20 steps. Found 14 soda and beer cans. Also, pick-ed up a few more at Lowe's on Spring St. in Lakewood, CA.
