FMJ - Day 490

July 31: Ajay and I went for a long walk while Maya was at tennis camp this morning... along Reseda Blvd. & Chatsworth Blvd. 22 cents was found -- 2 dimes and 2 pennies. At Ralph's, we found a penny on the floor and a dime in the coin counting machine. On Reseda, we found a very drove over and bent penny. Then, a stop to cool off in the Albertson's, Ajay found a dime.

July 29: To Cerritos and San Marino, we went yesterday to celebrate two separate family events. The first was the announcement of my wife's cousin's wife's pregnancy... a little one is on the way. Dini Aunty and Pari Uncle are to be proud grandparents for the 5th time soon. The next big event, Leela's 4th birthday party!
The party was held at my brother-in-law's wife's brother's house in San Marino. His brother-in-law and sister-in-law are both doctors practicing in Pasadena, CA. Their house is very much "Great Gatsby like" as it was built in the 1920's. The back yard is simple yet very elegant with a huge swimming pool and outdoor sound system... great for parties. Everyone had a great time! NO money finds for Day 488 --- just too busy!

FMJ - Day 486

July 27: Late last evening in San Luis Obispo, we shopped the Downtown area... we happened upon a farmer's market and drank fresh pomegrant/kiwi juice. We also had Foster's Freeze cones. While standing in front of the Pottery Barn someone in the crowd dropped $16.00 at our feet in the form of a Ten, five and One. Ajay discovered it as I was keeping my eye on him and his new skateboard. He claims to do several tricks... one is called an Ollie. Don't know that one exactly... somehow he's picked up of the "boarder lingo."

We stayed at the Ragged Point Inn -- a quaint place along Highway 1. In the afternoon, our road adventure led up the coast to Big Sur. At the Big Sur State Park, we hiked the trails to the Pfeiffer Falls and to "Valley View" We stopped at Nepenthe for dinner. Nepenthe is a beautiful spot about 2 miles south of Big Sur. It's a lodge and restaurant known for it's great food and one the most picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean. We made many stops at the overlooks and took in, the from our picnic chairs, the Sunset over the clouds on our way back to Ragged Point.

I found a dime on the court at Cerritos Park where I played tennis in the morning. On Saturday, Maya found a penny at the Chipotle in Cerritos while having lunch with Mayma and Ajay. July 21: No finds. I played in a Men's Open Tennis tournament in Oxnard, CA. My first round match was against Russel Stuart who happens to be the Tennis Pro at the Beverly Hills Tennis Club. I lost 6-2, 6-1. It was a good showing... many of the games were quite close and I felt that when I was able to return his "Roddick Style" serve and could start a rally then I played the point well. There were some awesome exchanges. Right now, I'd place my tennis abilities as a few notches above the best park player and some teaching pros but just a tad bit below the college players and ranked men's open players. Maybe there's still chance for this 39 year old to make his mark again on the tennis courts...

FMJ - Day 479

July 20: I found two quarters while playing tennis at California State at Northridge. The coins were lying at the botton of the small trash can that hangs on the fence at the end of the court. I suppose some just threw the coins away. Weird, but not unheard of happening before.

FMJ - Day 467 Biggest Money Find Ever!

July 8: After an early dinner at an Italian Restaurant in Thousand Oaks, I found a folded wad of bills on the sidewalk. The bills totaled: $77.00! This is our biggest find of cash ever. This single find amounts to a full 9.6% of all Found Money Jar finds. As of this day, the Found Money Jar now stands at over $800.00 in finds.

One funny thing about this find is that about two minutes before it happened I had left my wife at the restaurant so that I could fetch our car and pick her up at the door. As I started off for the car, I thought to myself that it would be neat to find a large amount of cash before I returned to pick her up. Strangely, there was this older couple who smiled at me as they passed me on the sidewalk which was just at the moment that this thought came to mind and then I few seconds later, I make the $77.00 find. Premonition, maybe?

We made two other finds today. 11 cents at the McDonald's on Yosemite Ave. and 12 cents at the Jack in the Box on Moorpark Rd.

FMJ - Day 465 "Our First Dodger's Game!"

July 6: 10th inning loss to the Florida Marlins. Score 6-5. This evening, Maya and Ajay went to their first ever in their lives baseball game at Dodger Stadium. The tickets were $40 3rd row field seats along right field. Ajay and I brought our gloves... He proudly pointed his Dodgers' foam #1 Fan Finger and yelled, "GO DODGERS!" I don't think they had a quiet moment for the entire 10 inning game between the two of them except when the cotton candy was devoured... Maya had her first Dodger Dog and bought a Dodgers pennant. Ajay got his first Valenzuela Dodger T-Shirt. I almost caught a foul ball. As it was descending, the ball looked like it was in my glove but sailed left about 3 rows up... drats. A good time was had by all.

After the game, we shopped at the Dodgers' souvenir shop.... AJAY MADE THE FIND OF THE DAY! He found a Ten Dollar Bill and a One Dollar Bill folded together on the floor of the souvenir shop. What a way to mark his first MLB Baseball game attendance.

BTW... Our tickets were given to us by my wife's company. So, a gracious thank you goes out to her boss from us.

After the tennis, we stopped at 7-11 for some refreshments. We found 2 nickels and 3 pennies there.

** The other day, as I went for a bike ride, I picked up a penny from the street a few houses down the way from ours. I somehow misplaced it for over the weekend and only discovered it again this afternoon. So, I'm adding it to today's totals.

What's in the Jar?

July 4th afternoon, Ajay, Maya and I did an inventory on the Jar's current residents... The jar harbors some foreign coins from Mexico, England, Canada, Phillipines and the European Union Countries. So, if you were wondering just what U.S. Currency and coinage were contained in the Found Money Jar...

Here's your answer:

1 $20 bill
3 $ 5 bill
8 $ 1 bill

75 Quarters
149 Dimes
65 Nickels
869 Pennies

What does it add up to?

$88.39

The above amount represent an overage of 58 cents from what the FMJ blog records attest to be contained in the Found Money Jar. How can this be explained when we keep such fantastic records of all the finds? I chalk it up to a little guy named Ajay and probably our cleaners -- Mr. Pedro and his lovely wife who are of the utmost honesty and probably drop the coins they find cleaning our house into the jar. They're not aware of the Found Money Jar project and are absolved of any malice in throwing off the count. As for my son, I'll just let it slip for now.

FMJ - Day 463 Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July! We found just two pennies while getting the family haircuts at the salon in The Oaks Mall in Thousand Oaks, CA. Special thanks to Mr. Spence for becoming a regular donor to the Bottles & Cans Fund. Our house on the hill in Simi Valley provided an "8 miles wide view" of the Simi Valley Fireworks at Santa Susana Park -- What a show! No more driving to some out of way place to see fireworks for us --- just go in the backyard. No more hauling a cooler, four chairs and accoutrements. Makes me think more and more that we'll have to buy this house someday.

FMJ - Day 462

July 3: This morning I found a penny in the curbside dirt along the parking of the Old Susana Cafe. It's a quiet breakfast joint... unfortunately, it has changed hands since the last time I was there and the new owner raised all the prices on the menu. It was $38.00 with tip for breakfast for the kids and me. I had the 8 ounce sorloin patty and eggs at $8.45, Maya the French Toast and eggs with a sausage at $7.99 and Ajay the Chicken Fingers and Fries which included his soda at $5.95... the kids have been begging me to take them because the restaurant has an Old Timey theme with a covered wagon out front. Personally, I thought the meal was worth about $20.00 --- certainly not $38.00! TWO THUMBS DOWN!

In the afternoon, Ajay went over to his friend Calvin's house... Maya and I went to play tennis in Moorpark. Unfortunately, way too many other people decided to do the same thing and we were unlucky in finding an open court. So, we had a chinese food lunch, instead. Found a dime at the Chinese food place in the Von's Center on Tierra Rejada Rd. Maya and I also made a stop at the Wood Ranch Recycling Center -- the turn-in gained $11.14 for the B&C Fund.

An evening trip to Topanga Promenade Mall to beat the heat in their air-condition caverns, Ajay and I found 3 quarters, 5 dimes and 8 pennies on our mall walking game.

FMJ - Day 461

July 2: This afternoon, we enjoyed screening the movie... "Ratatouille." It was excellent... the kids loved it. I, especially, liked the emphasis on the creed of "anyone can cook." I might even ascribe to this philosophy tonight. After the movie, the Kids and I partook in Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream... approaching the store, I found a nickel. Earlier at McDonald's on Tapo Street, we found 2 dimes and 4 pennies. I didn't want McD's food and, instead, opted for the Panda Bowl across the shopping center -- found a penny walking in for my order. Ajay and Maya found a quarter and 32 pennies laying on a table in the outdoor food court at the Tapo Canyon Center... I suspect some may have been pulled from the fountain as many kids were practicing the fine art of coin scavenging on this 100+ degree HOT day while they frolicked and splashed in the water. Incredibly HOT TODAY! NO TENNIS FOR ME!

Along my morning bike ride, I found two pennies near the air pump at the Shell Station on Yosemite Ave.

FMJ - Day 460 -- Recycling Update.

July 1: 80 cents found. Our first find occurred at the 99 Cents Only store on L.A. Ave. There, we found a penny inside the store and a quarter, 2 dimes and 8 pennies outside along the sidewalk. After that, we went to the recycling center in the Ralph's shopping center on Sycamore Ave. We recouped $7.05 for the fund from this turn-in. We also found a quarter and a penny while cashing our recycling slip.
